About the Author
Mirabai Starr is an adjunct professor of philosophy and religious studies at the University of New Mexico. She has studied a wide variety of religious traditions, including Hinduism, Judaism, Buddhism, and Christianity. She is also the translator of Teresa of Ávila’s Interior Castle and The Dark Night of the Soul by John of the Cross. She lives in Taos, New Mexico.

I consider Mother Teresa to be the best example of living for and walking with God in modern times. That lead me to question why she chose the name Teresa. My father was Methodist, my mother was Catholic, and I raised my family in the Assembly of God. I was raised Methodist and had no knowledge of saints. I picked up this book because of Mother Teresa. Teresa of Avila wanted to draw close to God. She chose to spend daily TIME with Him. Here is something she learned along the way: "As I have mentioned, I wasted precious time worrying that I lacked the humility necessary to be worthy of practicing prayer. And so far for a year and a half, I did not pray at all. All I succeeded in doing was plunging myself into hell. I didn't need any devils to drag me there. The spirit of evil is smart to lend its hand in this way, luring the soul away from prayer. The spirit knows that a soul who perseveres in prayer is lost to him." Buy the book if you are seeking to draw close to God and buy a highlighter too. You will need it.

This book is amazing! St. Teresa has a way of vividly describing prayer and her life so that you really get to understand her as a person and realize that everyone is called to be a saint!
I wasn't crazy about this book and I don't enjoy saying that about anything a Saint wrote but it was pretty long and tedious. The only reason I gave 3 stars is because I didn't dislike it.

Very well written and a very interesting and moving book.
Have just begun this book, but find Teresa of Avila FASCINATING. Many today, would be able to identify with this "saint". An exciting read!!!!!!!!!!!!!
