All six of the forgotten Coast Florida series should have been written in one, or at most, two volumes. It took me about an hour to read each book, and each book unnecessarily duplicated descriptions and background material. Worst, the ending was unresolved and completely unsatisfying. Sorry, not worth the kindle price for six books.
I really enjoyed reading this series. However, the murdered guy in the wall was slightly connected to the main characters but it seems like there just wasn't that much character development in this one. Maggie is a grown woman with two children but she seems a little clueless about her relationship with Wyatt. If they're both in love with one another, why is it so uncomfortable for her to talk about some of the things that they need to talk about? Their conversation should be easy with one another. She definitely needs some more sizzle to her personality. She should want to get down to business and marry him. It's not like they're young and need to wait until they finish school or they mature more. They did figure out who murdered the dead guy in the wall so that wrapped up. I am looking forward to reading the next book, I just hope that some truths are revealed to her and she wakes up about Wyatt.
First off, I think you should not read this book until you’ve read the previous four in the series. Yes, this is a series and each installment adds a bit to the one before it...These are NOT stand alone books that feature the same characters, like Lee Child’s Jack Reacher or John Sanford’s Lucas Davenport etc..... These don’t even qualify as whole books, but rather a “novella†or a longer short story... And for that alone I deduct one star..It irks the you know what out of me...Aside from the redundancies of repeating descriptions of persons, places, things and back story, what remains is an excellent story. The characters are so well developed it’s like you know them and love them anyways...I do feel like the first five installments should have been published as one stand alone novel.A lost of questions have been answered by the end of book five and it’s a good stopping point. I don’t feel like I HAVE to buy book six in order to find out what happens next... and that’s a good thing... This one clears up some things, yet leaves plenty of what if’s without ending in a cliffhanger... Since I read all five books in two days, I can take a break and pick up a couple more in a month or so for reading on an international flight..And Yes, I will probably buy a few more of them. I was glad to see more of Miss Evangeline in book 5 and Stoopid too. Dawn Lee McKenna is a fine writer and storyteller
I liked the story line and setting of this book. This was the first book in this series that I've read, and probably due to the repetition from previous stories, which seemed to annoy other reviewers, I found the characters fleshed out enough to know their relationships with each other and a good bit of their character. Maggie irritated me a bit with her relationship with Wyatt. For people who had known each other for years, going out to dinner seemed to be almost traumatic for her and she just couldn't discuss her relationship with Boudreaux with him. I did like, however, how they worked together to solve the case. While not a complex story that makes you lie awake at night trying to solve the case yourself, it was a pleasant, quick read with no profanity, explicit sex or violence.
This is my 5th in The Forgotten Coast of Florida series. Having lived in Florida all my life, I was interested to read about Apalachicola, Florida. Apalachicola is the oyster capital! This story is about Lt. Maggie Redmon, her boss Sheriff Wyatt Hamilton and the local Kingpin, Bennett Boudreaux. Maggie has two children, Sky and Klye, a pet rooster, Stoopid, and a dog named Coco. There a lot of local rumors about Bennett Boudreaux and some are true. He is labelled a criminal and the bad boy, (even though he is almost 60). Maggie and Mr. Boudeaux become friends throughout all the books.I loved this series of books about Maggie and all the other characters. They were such good books I could not put them down . I would read for several hours in the wee hours of the night. I have 2 more books of this series to read. Read this series and you won't regret it. If you like reading some of the history of Florida, you will love this also.
With a new author, one of my first questions always is - what is the plot? Then, how well do they fill in the characters, how well do the characters fit the choreography of the story, how deep are the characters? Is it either well enough constructed fantasy to be real, or realistic enough to get lost in?For this murder/mystery, the answers are all positive things. The characters are fairly good at the beginning, but are nicely deep by the end. There are surprises, some overlain with strong hints, some totally out of the blue. The dance - ah, the dance! Reading the dance of these characters as they unfolded, was a sublime joy.
Awesome Page Turners. Couldn't put these books down. It was so real that I felt I was back there on the coast. She makes it so real and come alive that I felt I was walking down those same streets and visiting all of the same places I have visited before. Love the characters and the authenticity of the areas and the people. I too, am a writer of mystery and suspense but I was held captive by these 4 books and went on and ordered the 5th, 6th and 7th. Page turners for sure. I lived and worked in the Franklin County, Florida for 20 plus years and she truly captures it all, the places, the businesses, the people. She is now my favorite author. I am reading # 6 and soon will be on # 7. I hope she continues to write more in this series. From this Author- Wahletta Hale (pen name) to Dawn Lee McKenna, you are awesome.
