I'm handy guy. I like do work on my own stuff and do what I can when it makes sense. I bought this book to help add craftsmanship and design to household moldings. This book does excellent job explaining the basics (miters, cutting tips, marking angles, setting reveals in jambs, etc.) but goes a bit further adding projects like ceiling panels, wainscoting, beams, custom moldings, and even fireplace surround. The best part of Taunton's book series is number of helpful pictures they add to each tutorial.
I recently found myself redoing a bedroom into a nursery. As part of this, I decided to replace all of the baseboards and door casings. My past experience at this sort of thing consisted solely of helping my father in law do crown moulding in one room. When I asked his advice, he pointed me to this book.The strength of this book is the sheer number of pictures. The descriptions are adequate, but for the weekend DIYer, the pictures help me minimize mistakes (and thus reduce costs). The baseboards and door casings in the nursery went so smoothly and turned out so well that I decided to go ahead and do chair rail around the room as well.Professionals may perhaps have some quibbles, but the book seems about perfect for a hobbyist.
There is NOTHING as frustrating as having a cut that is too short, or a bit off--and having to invest in a new piece of trim. We recently recased my Mom's windows and this was our guide. It made measuring and cutting much less stressful--especially when some of the cuts happened off site and we had photos only to refer to. A great resource for any DIYer!

Great used book at a great price. I paid more for shipping than I did for the book, The used book was in execellent condition and did not appear to have been used at all. I am an amature in home repairs and have picked up many techniques from watching my brother-in-law who is a general contractor. Many of the techniques he has shown me over the years were absent from the book. It is these kind of details that affect the quality of the installation and also cuts down on the time spent on trial and error.There is a lot of very practical but basic information with clear pictures and well written corresponding text.The reason I purchased the book was to help me with the installation of baseboard moldings on uneven and unlevel walls. The time the book spent on this was minimal and suggested trail and error. Yeah, I do trial and error but was hoping for more "tricks of the trade" that would elimnate some of the trail and error.
Great book on the subject. I already learned a few tricks to keep things simple. Some of the ways that I was doing things as a non professional were tedious compared to some of the simple solutions in this book.
This book came in handy when we were installed our tile backsplash in our new kitchen. The only thing it is really missing is information for installing tile using a membrane rather than thinset or mortar. It did give us some good tips though that helped with our project. Probably more information than we really needed since our project was just a kitchen backsplash.
One of the best DIY books I've bought. Love the series. The Taunton group seems to have only the best advice and the presentation of ideas, methods, and tricks is clear and concise. Well worth the minimal cost for superb tips & tricks.
